The Family Tree

This horticultural work has been created by Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve et Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie boroughs of Montreéal. This work of art represents a tree within which appears a family. The trees primary limbs symbolize the two parents, and also the two boroughs in which the Space for Life and its Botanical Garden are located.

It is a tribute to the family unit, which is the foundation of our society. The birth of a child, an event full of joy and hope, exemplifies the theme of this, edition of Mosaïculture Internationales, Land of Hope.

On our planet, in many countries, a tree is planted to mark the birth of a child. The Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rosemont La petite-Patrie boroughs are no stranger to this tradition, thanks to a special program whereby a newborn’s family can have a tree planted in a municipal park to honour the arrival of new life.

The piece shows one parent holding a newborn, while an older sibling hides behind the other parents. Colourful flourishes within the vegetation are means to evoke Montreal’s multiethnic composition and the heightened importance of new immigrants.

The trees upper foliage, show between the two adults, form a heart shape that expresses the powerful bond of love within a family. Each small leafs also bears the heart motif, to indicate that this love will be transmitted to newborns still to come and to future generations.
