Almost all of the communities are located within so called Regional Municipal Counties or MRC in French (for Municipalites regionales de comte). Nevertheless, a few of cities, towns and villages do not form part of a county. There are also Indian reserves, which are not a part of counties.

In the past, many local villages were called Townships or Cantons in French. Many other, were formed as parish. Till now, you can find townships and parish municipalities everywhere in Quebec.
