Montreal Zombie Walk 2013 was held on Saturday, October 19th, 2013. This walk was a public manifestation, where participants walked around dressed as zombies and had zombie makeup. It started at the Place des Festivals in the Quartier des Spectacles (Metro Place-des-Arts). Animation, photo-booth and make-up tents were on site from noon, but the departure of the mob was at about 3:30pm.

People could be “zombified” at the make-up tents from noon to 3pm in exchange of 15$ (tip not included). It was not obligatory to be dressed as a zombie but it was highly recommended, as if half the people would just follow around without a costume, there would be no point being in a zombie walk. Many were dressed as zombie hunters or survivors.

After the zombies left the Place des Festivals (Metro Place-des-Arts), they wandered through the streets of downtown Montreal for a while. The walk ended back at the Place des festivals at about 17.

There was a great zombie party after the walk at Abreuvoir (403 Ontarion Est) and then the zombies went back to the cemetery.

Zombie walks have been organized before in several cities all around the world since 2005. In Montreal it’s held since 2011, it’s free and open to everyone.

For the Montreal Zombie Walk 2014, please remember that everybody is welcome, but some kids could be scared as they might not share the same taste for zombies as you do.

Mosaiculture is a refined ornamental horticultural art that involves creating and mounting living artworks made primarily from plants with colourful foliage (generally annuals, occasionally perennials).

These two- and three-dimensional designs, drawings, sculptures and reliefs employ a wide variety of flora. This multifaceted and complex art, draws on numerous practices: on painting for its palette, on sculpture for its structure and volume, on horticulture in its use of plants in a living, constantly changing environment.

The non-profit corporation Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal (MIM) was created with the mission to promote horticulture and gardening as both a vital component of the urban landscape and an expression of new millennium values. In 1998 it launched the first-ever Mosaïcultures Internationales in the Old Port of Montréal, in association with the city’s Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces Department.

MIM fosters development and innovation in mosaiculture as well as regulates competitions held in the framework of local, national and international events. It promotes the art of gardening by encouraging friendly and professional relations between the various stakeholders with an interest in mosaiculture.

Mosaiculture should be distinguished from topiary, which features mostly shrubs pruned to create different shapes.

Psychology, the scientific enquiry into the human mind and behavior, is omnipresent. Pursuing an academic career in the field, one of the first realizations one has is that, to a certain extent, everyone is a psychologist.

After all, social competence (defined, in psychology, as the ability to get what one wants from others while still maintaining positive relationships) is important to humans as social beings, and would be all but impossible without a fundamental grasp of workings of the psyche. To become a practicing psychologist in Quebec is far from an easy task. One must first complete studies in psychology at the doctoral level, a Master’s degree used to be enough in the 1990s but the PhD has since established itself as a requirement.

Then, one must pass a 45 hours course offered by the Ordre des Psychologues du Quebec, the professional association of Quebec psychologists.

On the bright side, one need not satisfy those rigorous prerequisites to enjoy the subject. As is most likely evident, this website is about the province of Quebec. Now, a plausible argument can be constructed that since there are psychologists in Quebec, and a lot of psychological phenomena goes on daily, talking about psychology is warranted. Well, maybe that sounds a bit like a weak argument…

The better explanation would be that (to judge by the fact that psychology has consistently been the most popular major in our Southern neighbor year after year) psychology is fascinating. On many occasions, psychology has been portrayed in the popular culture, perhaps the most famous are the comedies Analyze This and Analyze That, both starring Robert De Niro, Billy Cristal and a former cast member of Friends, Lisa Kudrow. Pop psychology and pseudoscientific (and also scientific) psychological tests are also prevalent in the media.

Notwithstanding, psychology is much more than the cliché of a person lying on a couch while a therapist ponders his or her unconscious, and hopefully, the following division provides ample support for this claim.

The new child support model introduced major changes. The new Guidelines base the amount of support on the paying parent’s income and the number of children. The required child support amounts take into consideration the average spending on children at a similar income level. It can be calculated with the Quebec Child Support Calculator.

The Guidelines provide both lawyers and judges with a consistent method for detecting the appropriate amount of child support and protects a basic amount of income for the self-support of the paying parent.

What Are Net Child Care Expenses?

Net child care expenses are the annual child care expenses which must be paid to a child care provider so that the custodial parent can work, attend school or a training program or because of the custodial parent’s illness. Any benefit, subsidy, deduction or income tax credit relating to the expenses must be deducted from the total, such as the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) paid to the parents. Since the UCCB is taxable, the net after-tax amount received must be applied to reduce the amount of net child care expenses. Each parent must calculate the tax benefit related to child care expenses and deduct it from the gross amount of the expenses paid. The net cost of child care expenses will be divided between the two parents in the final calculation of child support.

What Are Net Post-Secondary Education Expenses?

Net post-secondary education expenses are the annual expenses paid to enable a child to pursue a post-secondary education. They include tuition fees, the cost of books and materials, and necessary transportation, food or housing costs. Any benefit, subsidy, deduction or income tax credit relating to the expenses must be deducted from the total, as must any amount received by the child as a student loan or bursary. Each parent must calculate the tax benefit related to the expenses and deduct it from the gross amount of the expenses paid. The net cost of post-secondary education expenses must then be divided between the two parents in the final calculation of child support.

What Are Net Special Expenses?

Net special expenses are expenses other than child care and post-secondary education expenses. They typically include medical expenses or the costs relating to a child’s elementary or secondary education, another educational program or extra-curricular activities. Any related benefit, subsidy, deduction or income tax credit must be deducted from the total. Each parent must calculate the tax benefit related to the expenses and deduct it from the gross amount of the expenses paid. The net cost of the special expenses must then be divided between the two parents in the final calculation of child support. If the parents cannot agree on the necessity of the special expenses, they will have to ask a Court to decide whether the expenses will be allowed, and the amount that will be allowed.

Do the Guidelines Permit Adjustments?

Yes. Not all families or children are alike. The Guidelines are intended to set a minimum level for parental contribution. The amount of support may be adjusted in certain circumstances. For example, a court may adjust the payments if the table amount causes undue hardship to either parent or the child. This might happen when the parent paying support has exceptionally high family-related debts, or significant costs in visiting the children or supporting other children or dependants. However, the court will only reduce the amount if the standard of living of the support payor’s household would be lower than the other household.

The Child Support Guidelines recognize that other factors might justify support payments that are different from the table.

These include the type of custody arrangement, special provisions contained in an order, income over $150,000, and so on.

In Quebec, as well as anywhere, stories and legends pass on from generation to generation and refuse to die.

Long ago, before European colonists, missionaries, and settlers, there were dozens of tribes and peoples of various beliefs and customs living on this land. Each one had its legends which would reflect their beliefs and their life.

Europeans brought their own stories.

The story of the loup-garou and the story of the chasse-galerie - a flying birch bark canoe, - are the most popular, and dozens of versions of each of these stories exist.

Many Quebec legends were preserved by Marius Barbeau, one of Canada's best-known folklorists, an anthropologist at the National Museum in Ottawa (now the Canadian Museum of Civilization). Marius Barbeau collected traditional Canadian songs, stories and artefacts.

He focused his research largely on the French-language traditions and those of many of Canada's aboriginal groups. You’ll find in this section some of local legends and stories, as well as a number of nice stories from other lands.

Le Beau danseur : The Handsome Dancer. The legend of the Handsome Dancer, one of the most persistent in Canadian folklore, was passed from generation to generation of early quebecers. It first appeared in print in 1837 and tells the story, with variations from time to time, of how the devil, dressed in the height of fashion appears at village dances to dance with the prettiest girls. As late as 1952 this hardy perennial was going the rounds again, this time at Routhierville, Quebec and Campbelton, New Brunswick. So widespread was gossip of the manifestation, Canadian press filed a story duly reporting the latest news of the Handsome Dancer.

Quebec has an affable approach to the term Festival.

There are festivals of movies, theatre, music, dance, art and so almost weekly. Local restaurants feature festivals of spaghetti, smoked meat, draft beer, shrimp and every food can find in the world.

Still, several annual events are real and very interesting events which visitors will enjoy without any doubt. The history of the First Nations in Quebec reveals the use and occupation of most of Quebec for at least 5000 years prior to the arrival of the Europeans.

The Amerindian nations and the Inuit nation, total some 90,000 inhabitants, they account for about 1,4% of Québec's population.

The two largest and strongest First Nations in Quebec are the James Bay Cree and the Mohawk communities of Kahnawake, Kanesatake and Akwesasne, but there are 9 other First Nations spread throughout the territory of the province. The Amerindians speak different languages.

For example, the languages of the Cree, Montaignais, MicMac and Ojibway First Nations of Quebec are derived from the Algonquian linguistic family, while the languages of the Mohawk are derived from the Iroquoian linguistic family.

Cote-Nord or Northern Shore is the second largest administrative region in Quebec, after Northern Quebec (Nord-du-Quebec) region.

The total area of Cote-Nord region is of more than 247,627 square kilometres or 95,609 square miles. The territory occupies a fourth of the geographic area of Québec.

It has a population is of about one hundred thousand inhabitants. The region covers much of the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River's estuary. Besides, the land of the Gulf of St. Lawrence past Tadoussac is part of the region.

There are 25 municipalities in the Cote-Nord region.

Two towns, namely Baie-Comeau (23, 000 inhabitants) and Sept-Iles (25, 000) amount for more than half of the total population. Cote-Nord includes also Anticosti Island, the Mingan Archipelago and a few other islands. The economy is based on mining, electricity, aluminium production and tourism.

Lumbering is also active, but in decline. Nowadays, Cote-Nord has fourteen hydroelectric dams. The most important is the Manicouagan-Outardes complex. This complex supplies Québec with over 10,500 megawatts of power.

As to its tourist activities, Cote-Nord is well-known as the Whale Route. Indeed, whales are easily observable here, and the area is considered as one of the best places in the world for the observation of these mammals.

City of Laval, established in 1965, has a population of more than 380, 000 people and its ranked 14th city in Canada and 3rd largest city in Québec. Laval a city and an administrative region, located in the Greater Montreal Area.

The city is located on Ile Jesus, across the Des Prairies River from Montreal. The city also includes the Laval islands in the Rivière des Prairies. The territory of present-day Laval was inhabited by Mohawks.

The first European Settlers were Jesuits who were granted a seigneury in 1636. In1675, Francois de Montmorency de Laval, bishop of Quebec, was granted control of the island and later, in 1702, a parish was founded here, named after St-Francois de Sales. In 1845, first villages are founded on the island.

The first of them, Ste-Rose, remained as the main community for a long time The city of Laval-des-Rapides was incorporated in 1912, and local communities began to grow throughout the following years, due to its proximity to Montreal. In Laval, about 16% of the population were born outside of Canada, many immigrants hailing from the French Caribbean, North Africa, the Middle East, Europe. Most of the population are Christians (more than 90%). Religions such as Islam, Judaism, Buddhism number less than 5% combined. In Laval, French is spoken as a mother tongue by around 70% of the population. The next most common mother tongues is English – about 7%, followed by Italian – more than 4%, Greek and Arabic – less than 4% each, Spanish – about 2% and other languages.

The city of Laval is divided in six sectors which approximately cover the territories of the 14 former municipalities and other territories, amalgamated in a big city.

Only a few remnants of the past remain in Laval, except for a few historic neighbourhoods, but the city is mainly renowned for its scientific attractions with the Cosmodome Space Science Centre, and for its cultural activities. There are numerous attractions and activities for children, especially in the Chomedey district. Families have the choice among the Recreatheque, the Armand Frappier Museum and Jungle Adventure, which is a huge maze on several levels.
