James Bay Walleye Fishing Festival
The James Bay Walleye Fishing Festival is held near Chapais on the bank of Lake Opemisca, in June of every year. The festival is the most popular fishing tournament in Quebec.
The idea of organizing a fishing tournament in the James Bay territory was the brainchild of Mr. Richard Laplante, businessman from Chapais, who conceived the great event in 1999. Each year, nearly a thousand participants come to fish at this fishing tournament. Over the years, the James Bay Walleye Fishing Tournament has without a doubt become a significant product of interest for tourists. More than 110 000$ in prizes and bursaries are distributed among winners of the Amateur and Professional categories of the tournament.
Chapais, little town in Northern Quebec Region, with a population of approximately 2,000, is situated in the southeast quadrant of the James Bay area. The James Bay Walleye Fishing Tournament receives the support of many prestigious partners, such as Hydro-Québec, town of Chapais, Baie-James Municipality, Princecraft, Mercury, Molson Coors Light, Mines Opinaca Ltd, Quebec Peche, and Action Chasse Peche.
