Almost all of the communities are located within so called Regional Municipal Counties or MRC in French (for Municipalites regionales de comte). Nevertheless, a few of cities, towns and villages do not form part of a county.
There are also Indian reserves, which are not a part of counties. In the past, many local villages were called Townships or Cantons in French. Many other, were formed as parish.
