Notre-Dame-des-Bois (population around one thousand), is located in Estrie Region of Quebec ( Eastern Townships), Le Granit County.

Notre-Dame-des-Bois one of the highest villages in terms of altitude in the region and in Quebec, located at the base of the marble mountains that form the New Hampshire and Maine borders. The first settlers in the area were gold prospectors. Later French-Canadian colonists came to settle here on the banks of the Arnold River and the Salmon River. These families came back from the United States after the Repatriation Act, signed in Ditton on April 16, 1875.

Considered the village’s founder, M. Vaillant built the first sawmill around 1870, and the next year, François-Xavier Dufresne clear-cut three acres of land on the Sixth Range and established a blacksmith shop. Thus Chesham Village, named after an English village, was born.

A few settlers arrived from France and Belgium, and in October 1876, the population grew to 636 souls. The new village was constituted in 1877. The name of Chesham was changed for the name Notre-Dame-des-Bois in honour of the Virgin Mary.
