Grenville-sur-la-Rouge
Grenville-sur-la-Rouge is a municipality located in the Laurent Ian region, in the Argenteuil County, and situated along the border with Ontario, along the shore of the Ottawa (Outaouais) River. About 3 thousands inhabitants live there.
Grenville-sur-la-Rouge is a predominantly Francophone community, but one third of inhabitants speak English in their families. Note than the municipality of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge surrounds the town of Greenville. The municipality was created in April, 2002 as a result of fusion between the township of Grenville, the village of Calumet and the small communities of Avoca, Bell Falls, Grenville Bay, Kilmar, Marelan and Point-au-Chene.
Most of the population of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge live in a rural setting. The name of Grenville traces back to Lord William Wyndham Grenville, a British statesman and prime minister in 1806 and 1807. The Grenville Township is proclaimed in 1808, but the first colonists come to settle here in 1829, when a canal was built by the British military to bypass a series of rapids in the Ottawa River. The Rouge (Red) River runs from north to south through the centre of the municipality of Grenvillle-sur-la-Rouge (translated to English, this name means Grenville-on-the-Red".
Businesses located in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge are resource-based, as forests cover a significant part of its territory. A magnesite mine in Kilmar provides ore for Harbison-Walker’s refractory plant, located near by, in Marelan. Nowadays, tourism is an important part of the local economy. Indeed, the Rouge River has become Quebec’s most popular white-water rafting location and is considered one of best in North America.
A number of owners have turned century-old homes into Bed & Breakfasts in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, which are especially popular in the fall. Route 148 and Route 344 traverse the southern region of the municipality and highway 50 is currently under construction. In winter, the area is famous for its network of 53 kilometres of ski trails.
