Grandes-Piles is a village, located in the Mauricie Region (Mekinac County). It has a population of about 350.
The village of Grandes Piles overlooks a broad, calm stretch of the St-Maurice. Settlement here began in the middle of the 19th Century, when lumber industry became very important in the region. Grandes Piles was an important staging point for men and merchandise heading for lumber shanties upriver.
Today, at Grandes-Piles, a sense of 19th century lumberjack life is nobly recreated in a unique roadside theme attraction called Village du Bûcheron.
The site consists of a reconstructed lumber camp, complete with traditional outbuildings. The village also is a very popular tourist destination for nature lovers and for water-sports.
