Mont-Megantic Park
The main destination for many tourists visiting Quebec Eastern Townships is National Park of Mont-Megantic, run by SEPAQ, Quebec park operator.
This park offers a 50 km long network of hiking trails. A 10-kilometre loop to Mont St. Joseph is most popular for its ridges and outlooks on the way. Howeverm this destination is rather difficult and for an easier hike, tourists can drive up to Mont St. Joseph and take the Sentier des Crêtes, a one-kilometres trail at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres.
Thousands of visitors come visit the Park of Mont-Megantic to see the Perseid meteor showers of mid-August and attend the conferences at the cientific observatory at the mountaintop, from where astronomers are combing the universe for stellar phenomena.
The Mont-Megantic observatory is equipped with state-of-the-art telescope. However, a smaller telescope for the amateurs is located nearby, at the Astrolab, an interpretation center.
Please keep in mind that public access to the mountain top telescope is limited to summer, ending in August after the passage of Perseids. But the Astrolab has several rooms with exhibits.
The camping sites in the Park of Mont-Megantic area have been named after sky phenomena: Milky Way, Andromeda and Big and Little Dipper.
In winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing take over trails, with packages including supper, torchlight skiing and guided tours of the Astrolab.
In the Megantic region, lodging is widely available, local B&Bs offering packages with park activities. Many B&Bs are located in Notre Dame des Bois and along the routes. Several are opened only in summer
Reservations are required for overnight camping in the park of Mont-Megantic
