Pit-Head Frames

A good part of the history of the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region was written at the foot of mine pit-head frames.

These impressive structures are of vital significance in the daily operations of a mine since they house the machinery for the elevators that carry the men into the mine shaft and the steel skips that convey ore to the surface.

Today, primarily in the Abitibi region, it is not uncommon to spot a solitary pit-head frame far off in the distance rising above the forest in a place you might have mistakenly thought untrod by human foot.

These structures are now a fundamental part of our regional industrial heritage.

They are markers in the landscape - reminders of the toil of men who transformed hard rock into wealth.
