The Garden of glass and metal

Designed and created by Albert Mondor, a well-known horticulturist public figure in Quebec, and his team, the Garden of glass and metal is a landscaping design made of reclaimed steel and recycled glass.

This garden was designed to show a progression towards a universe where time has done its work by breaking down and polishing the glass bottles and by rusting, little by little, the structures that comprise it. When asked about his creation, Albert Mondor said: "I wanted this garden to be a place for meditation and reflection on the non-permanent nature of things, events and living beings. I want people who visit the Garden of glass and metal to realize that beauty can be found anywhere - often in places where we don't expect it - , even in empty bottles and old rusty pieces of metal! It is also a highly creative and ecological way to showcase the steel used in building mosaïscultures.”

In addition to pathways of crushed glass, a wall of reclaimed glass bottles and various chrome or rusted steel structures that make up the frame of this structure, there is also plant life, including flowers and silver, grey, orange, brown and crimson leaves, reflecting the various phases of steel, both shiny and oxidized. At Mr.  Mondor's request, artist-welder Jeffrey McDonald also included magnificent metallic insects and birds, which add a theatrical touch to everything.

The Garden of glass and metal was made possible due to support from the following partners: BFI Canada, Jardins Michel Corbeil, Jeffrey McDonald, artist-welder, Le Cactus fleuri, Pépinière Abbotsford, Premier Tech, Société des alcools du Québec, Tricentris, sorting centre.
