The Garden of Insects

With this work, Belgium’s Hainaut province, through its Green Spaces Department (Département des espaces verts) shows its interest in the environment.

To safeguard biodiversity, the Hainaut province integrated the Maya plan which prevents a long battle against the use of pesticides in order to preserve the province’s native plants and animals.

The Green Spaces Department efforts do not exclusively focus on limiting phytopharmaceutical products. The province is also committed to protecting and promoting the proliferation of insects in rural and urban areas, by setting up bee colonies in green spaces and increasing the introduction of bee species. The Maya Plan was created in Belgium to ensure the survival of bees and foraging insects, which are essential to the survival of many plant species. In towns, bee colonies are set up, trees and plants that attract bees are planted (whose pollen produces honey) and then nature is left to take its course.

This is why, to represent the province’s actions and reflect our national culture, the DEV created three-dimensional structures, showcasing a garden of insects.

More than one-third of the fruits and vegetables we eat come from a pollinating event involving an animal, either an insect, bird, or other. In nature, nearly 70 to 90% of flowering plant reproduction is partly or fully reliant on pollinating animals.
