Stewart Hall Art Gallery
The Stewart Hall Art Gallery, located in a beautiful historic manor of Pointe-Claire on the shores of Lake St. Louis, presents permanent and temporary art exhibitions on different themes all year round. The site of the municipal gallery offers a beautiful viewpoint on the Saint-Louis Lake.
The Stewart Hall Art Gallery house was originally owned by Charles MacLean. Later, it became property of Stewart family. In 1952, the family donated the house to the city of Pointe-Claire.
In 1959, the Stewart Hall Cultural Centre was opened there. In 1963, with the assistance of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada and other participants, the Stewart Hall Art Gallery opened its doors to the public. Since then, the Gallery has become renowned for its diverse programming of high quality exhibitions of historical and contemporary art from the local, national and international arts communities. The gallery features as well travelling exhibitions of collections from museums across Canada, the United States, and around the world, as well as works by both emerging and established Quebec and Canadian artists.
The Stewart Gallery offers an educational program with local schools and community groups that include gallery visits and activities designed for children of all ages. Lectures and artists' talks are a regular feature. The Stewart Hall Art Gallery Workshops are related to current exhibitions in order to expose students to a wide variety of techniques and visual language. Note than the Permanent Art Collection of Pointe Claire is housed in the various municipal buildings and offices throughout the city.
Hundreds of works in the collection include paintings, works on paper, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, ceramics, mixed media, straw, wall hangings, batik, handmade paper, and enamel on copper, leather & fur.
The Boutique of the Stewart Gallery offers original, one-of-a-kind gift items for all occasions, such as ceramics, wood, textiles, glass, jewellery, and pewter objects.
To get to the gallery, take a bus 211 at Lionel-Groulx metro station, Saint-Jean boulevard stop, and walk for about 10 minutes.
